PostSubject: The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman   Tue Dec 11, 2007 12:42 am

Has everyone heard about the controversial movie (based on a childrens story) The Golden Compass? Is it written by a self-proclaimed atheist. Has anyone here read the books (it's a trilogy) or has anyone scene the movie?

What's your take on this?

Blessed be,

Lisa

i've heard a little about it. What I've HEARD is disturbing. It's kind of like the antithesis to the C.S. lewis stories like The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe. Where Lewis has a Christian base, the other guy is atheist.
There is a Christian link i saw somewhere that discusses the movie; i'll try to find it.
I heard that one of the idea of the movie is a real humanistic approach to life that excludes God, and supposedly they try to, or do, kill God eventually. That sounds pretty crazy to me, but I'm not sure about all the details.

I heard that in one of the later books in the series, they meet God, and he's an angel that has deceived the other angels into thinking that he created them (reminds me of Lucifer...)

I wouldn't touch that movie with a 39 and a half foot pole.

It's not the fact that it was written by an atheist that bothers me. It's the fact that it was written by a militant atheist who seems to want to convert children to atheism through his works that bothers me.

I have already read the first too books and am almost done the third. Now, before anyone things poorly of that, I read the first too books in the summer when I saw the movie poster at the cinema. My mom got them out of the school library to read. I had no idea at the time of who the author was or what he stood for. When I started reading them, I had no idea how much controversy was going to come from the story.

The Golden Compass - the first book in his dark series - I had no idea that it had anything to do about God, Eve or Christianity until the very last chapter of the book when it mentioned "Genesis" and how God created Adam and Eve.

The Subtle Knife - the 2nd book in the dark series - Again, I didn't see any reference until the last chapter where they talked about Eve, God and a War.

The Amber Spyglass - the 3rd book in the dark series - ok, now in this book I see a lot more reference to God and a War but I haven't finished the book to see if they succeed in what they are trying to do - I guess the entire concept of the book is that they have found Eve, they are trying to get her back to the Kingdom where there will be mighty war which in the end, kills God.

The way these books are written, you have to read all three otherwise you have no idea how the story ends. The books flow from one to another.

I am finishing up the 3rd book, because I have read the other two and with all of the controversy, I need to know what happens and then I can make a full opinion on what happens. I do not agree with the author and his blatant comments about killing God or Christianity and in no way did this book make me question my faith, my religion or my relationship with God.

Blessed be, Lisa

I saw the movie. From what I heard a lot of the anti-religious stuff was toned down in the movie.
Overall the movie wasn't that great to me. I should have saved my money.

I don't see what the big ruckass is. Yeah, it's written by an atheist, yeah it might try to change people's views and all of that. I don't support it, but the movie is just a piece of fiction and fantasy, not to be taken literal or become any part of our lives. I haven't seen it yet, but I do intend on seeing it so I can have a better understanding of it all and have a more valid opinion.

My best friend went to see it and he is a devout Christian. He left the movie thanking God for what He's given him and all of that and being able to have Him in his life.

But, as I said, I'll reply once I have a better understanding of the entire situation.

PS (i also heard it was more of an attack on catholicism rather than God Himself.)

I have to agree with cpowanab7, this movie is simple a piece of fiction and shouldn't be taken to heart. I haven't seen it either, but i think many of us are taking this too far. How about the davinchy code book and movie?...isn't that more scarier to christians?

I think movies are taken too serious sometimes....perhaps if we realized its only fiction, then it wouldn't come out so bad.

I will get back to you all once i've seen the movie myself Smile

A Christian might not be influenced by a movie like that; or video games, music, or other types of entertainment. But we can't take for granted the subtlety of Satan. He is the great deceiver. Do you not think that the change in the media and our entertainment over the past 50 years has had anything to do with the way of our culture? The things that are out in the media now have slowly desensitized us over time. All we hear about on the news is murder, sexual crime, thievery, and etc. Think about the commercials we see on tv. What would people have thought 50 years ago about the beer ads, Victoria's Secret ads, and so on. Last night, on a standard tv station, i watched an ad for Girls Gone Wild videos. It was pure pornography on tv. It took me a minute to realize how disturbing it was to see that.

As Christians we have to guard against these kind of things. What do you think it will be like in 25 more years? Satan knows he can't cause Christians to do terrible things. But if all of our entertainment, everything the media feeds us, is filth, then how loose will our morals be as time goes on?

I decided to read the book, knowing full well the controversy behind it for the same reason I read Harry Potter. That reason being, I didn't want other people to tell me what to believe about it, I wanted to make my own opinion. The first 2 books to me seemed more like a book against organized religion more than books against God, and I have no problem with that, having myself been burned by organize religion I understand that it does fail, not because of God but because of man. The third book was different though. Heaven goes into allout war with existence to silence the rebellion which states that God isn't God, just the first angel born. I did have some feelings against this book because of this aspect and also the heavy Evolutionary influence. BTW, they do not kill God in this book, he just dies. Sorry to ruin the ending for anyone, but I've heard that used too any times to argue against this book. God is just really old according to this book and after the kids save him he dies.
